A Day in the Life of a Huntingdon Hawk: Natalie Harris ‘24
Montgomery, Ala. – Natalie Harris is a senior elementary education collaborative special education major from Phenix City, Alabama. The aspiring teacher was a four-year member of the Huntingdon cheerleading squad and has served the last year as the President of the Panhellenic Council. This semester, Natalie is doing her student teaching to complete her major and gain State of Alabama certification to teach. She has chronicled her day in the life of a Huntingdon Hawk on Monday, March 4.
“My day begins when my alarm goes off at 5:30 a.m. every Monday through Friday for me to begin my day as a student teacher at Airport Road Intermediate School in Millbrook. I leave my college residence on College Court at 6:15, go by Starbucks to get a coffee, and arrive at ARIS at 6:45. Today is special because I begin my new placement in special education. Before today I was in a third grade classroom for the duration of my general education placement. Even more exciting is we are celebrating Read Across America week, and today is pajama day!
Throughout my day I gave a variety of student services in the classroom and in the resource classroom. I even provided inclusion service in a Huntingdon alumni’s classroom, Amanda Main, class of 2020. At 11:00 a.m. we ate lunch, and my mentor teacher and I began our afternoon duties which included a trip to the office, where I saw another Huntingdon alumni Kirstin Wood, class of 2019! At 2:20 p.m. we finish providing services for the day and I left to make it to campus for my 3:15 p.m. class with Dr. McKinley.
We are currently days away from our EdTPA, teacher practice assessment, submission. We have been working on this portfolio since January and this determines if we are eligible to graduate in May. The class ended at 4:00. Afterwards, I went to eat with one of my roommates, Sarabeth Sansbury, in the Huntingdon dining hall, where the pasta bar was open and yummy. President Cam West and his lovely wife, Elizabeth, ended up sitting with us, and we all chatted about our various days! Then at 6:30, I had my Scotland travel class. This week Dr. Fremlin and Professor Kidwell discussed the arts of Scotland!! Yay!! Class ended at 8:30, afterward, I went back to my lovely home on College Court and got ready for Tuesday!”
