Dr. Joy J. Moore to Headline Chapman-Benson Lecture Events
Montgomery, Ala. – Dr. Joy J. Moore will headline Huntingdon’s 2024 Chapman-Benson Lecture Series with three presentations in March. The Chapman-Benson Lecture was established by the estate of Marie Chapman Benson, a member of the Huntingdon Class of 1930, to bring to campus a distinguished scholar and practitioner committed to the ministry of the Church.
Dr. Moore is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and currently serves as a Visiting Professor of Religion at Huntingdon. Her March 4 lecture “Good News in an Age of Contempt” will take place at 7:00 p.m. in Smith Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
On March 8, Dr. Moore will present a preaching workshop titled “For A Thousand Tongues: Preaching Above the Culture.” The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and includes a lecture, discussion, and small group conversation. The workshop is for all Christian leaders who are challenged to speak of the in-breaking of the Kingdom of God in a culture of distrust, division, and desperation. The free workshop includes lunch and continuing education credits (.2) for all who register at this link by February 28.
Dr. Moore will also be the featured speaker at the March 26 Tuesday Night Worship sponsored by Huntingdon’s Campus Ministries. The event will take place at 8:30 p.m. in Ligon Chapel. Dr. Moore’s sermon that night will be titled “Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes – a Message from Acts 16.”
Seeking to provide opportunities for the Christian hope to be explained and practiced, Dr. Joy J. Moore’s academic appointments have included vice president for academic affairs and professor of biblical preaching at Luther Seminary; associate professor of practical theology at Wesley Seminary at Indiana Wesleyan University; assistant professor of preaching and founding associate dean for the William E. Pannell Center for African American Church Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary; and associate dean for lifelong learning at Duke Divinity School, among other appointments. She has written for Sojourners magazine, Christian Century, Good News magazine, and Working Preacher. She can be heard weekly on the Sermon Brainwave podcast.
